Baby Boat by SeanDouglas Baby Boat by SeanDouglas
In preparation for the arrival of our first born I've been spending all my weekends building the little one a crib. It's clinker built from Huon pine, a species of pine endemic to Tasmania and famous for its boat building qualities, and measures about 1100mm from stem to stern. The davits are about 1500mm high. A local mattress maker is custom building a fitted mattress to go inside.

Thanks very much Rory. Whilst it wasn't always a pleasure making it, it was wonderful seeing Niamh sleep in it every night.

That is absolutely lovely, and makes my current project look quite sad by comparison.

The difference is that your boat will float. My joinery doesn't always stand up to close scrutiny. Thank you for the fave.

Congratulations!
That is awesome work.
Are you going to stain or varnish it?

I oiled it with Organoil. It's richened up the colour and brought out the grain. It sets to a durable finish and if it ever needs re-doing you just give it a light sand and re-do it. I'm too lazy for polyurethanes.

congratulations! And what a cool crib!Make sure you watch him when he's older. My dad decided to paddle a boat not much bigger than that across the St Lucie River in 1946. Scared 10 years off his poor mother.
