This was intended to be an animated loop, but time has got the better of me for the moment. It will potentially move at a later date but I've got bigger things to attend to just now.

Meantime however, enjoy the non-moving view of HMS Victory, ghosting along under fighting sail, braced two points on a starboard tack, guns run out, colours at the hoist.

Hey, what if you made it so that when you click the little flags down below, the big flag on the ship changes to the flag you clicked?  If you need some help programming that to work, I might be able to help you.

Have you ever heard of a game called Minecraft? It's essentially a game of building with cubes of various materials. I have been playing it for a few weeks and built myself a 3-masted ship, and just now thought of you. You might want to hop over to minecraft.net and tinker around in the free single-player. it seems like the next logical step for your pixelated ships.

I'm not sure how I missed this before, but it is lovely! Adding the famous signal at the bottom was a very nice touch--and once again I stand in awe of your attention to detail. The thought of drawing in all that rigging makes my eyes start to water--and not just because pictures of beautiful ships make me cry!

Attention to detail, huh? Do you think a true pedant would take 4 months to realise that they hadn't drawn a crew?

Drawing the rigging is easier than you'd think. Every sail has ropes which control it - sheets, tacks, halyards, clews, bunts, the list goes on. If you draw them for each sail, the rigging is drawn. It's actually easier than just drawing a vast web and hoping it looks right.

Thanks as always for the fave.

Bah, who needs a crew? Those things just sail themselves, right? ;p

So, you're saying, if one applies some actual knowledge of the subject plus a little bit of logic, that makes the task easier? Madness!

You're welcome as always. Thanks for sharing the nautical awesomeness. :D

Amazingly detailed work. :faint:

Nice touch with the rope and square knot frame.

What do the nautical flags mean?
Reply
:iconseandouglas:
SeanDouglas Featured By Owner Apr 22, 2009
Thanks Kat, actually I nicked the rope border from the rig guide, just to make a design out of it all. The flags actually say "England expects that every man will do his duty".

Each word is formed by a vertical set of three flags representing a number which corresponds to a word in the codes book. The last four columns (starting with the single flag) spell the word duty - there being no code number for that word. It seems stange to me that the Royal Navy had no code for a word as fundamental to the service as duty. Aubergine I could understand, but duty?

The original signal was also supposed to say "England submits..etc" but submits would have had to be spelt out like duty has been and seemed to long and complicated.

The flags signal: "England expects every man shall do his DUTY."
This was the signal that Lord Nelson ran up as he led his column into battle at Trafalgar.
